Backscatter X-ray scanners which emit low doses of ionising radiation are being trialled at some airports. A consultant refused to go through the full-body scanner at Manchester Airport this week, claiming it was potentially dangerous to his health.
Tony Aguirre, a specialist at Huddersfield Royal Infirmary, said he was not prepared to take the risk of being exposed to X-rays.
"X-rays are known to cause cancer and I think somebody will get cancer from this body scanner whether it's me or someone else," he said.
Mr Aguirre was barred from boarding his flight and took a flight from Liverpool instead, where scanners are not used.
Does he have a point? Is there a medical risk involved in being scanned?
A recent report from the British Institute of Radiology and the Royal College of Radiologists found the dose from an airport scan is 100,000 times lower than the average annual dose of radiation we get from natural background radiation and medical sources.
Dr Peter Riley, consultant radiologist and lead author of the report, said the risk was tiny.
"You can't say there isn't any risk. Some people will be at risk - perhaps two or three out of all the people who fly every year, but it wouldn't put me off flying."

In fact, the radiation dose from flying in a plane at 35,000ft is five microsieverts per hour. That is at least 100 times more than the dose received from a scan in an airport X-ray scanner - 0.02 to 0.03 microsieverts.
Even allowing for two or three scans per examination, this is about the same as people receive from natural background radiation in one hour (0.1 microsieverts).
We are, of course, exposed to radiation all the time in the form of radon, a natural radioactive gas. It is in the ground, in our homes and in the air we breathe.
But it seems that not all radiation experts are in complete agreement about the risk posed by airport scanners.
Last year Dr David Brenner, head of Columbia University's centre for radiological research, urged researchers to carry out more tests to look at the way the scanners affected specific groups, like children and passengers with gene mutations.
He also proposed missing out the head and neck from the scanning process to avoid increasing the risk of a type of skin cancer.
Dr Tony Nicholson, from the Royal College of Radiologists, says it is all a question of risk and benefit.
"There is a very tiny risk involved but that risk has to be put into context with all the other radiation we are exposed to.
"You wouldn't walk through the scanner if there isn't a reason for doing so, but they are designed to catch terrorists so we don't have a choice."
The airport security scanners now being trialled at Manchester, Gatwick and Heathrow airports are called backscatter X-ray scanners and they emit low doses of ionising radiation.
The growing use of CT scans has increased our exposure to radiation in the past 10 years They were first introduced in 2003 to combat what was seen as a growing terrorist threat.
Not every passenger has to go through the body scanners. They go through a metal detector first and then get directed to the body scanner or the exit.
Although Dr Riley's report concludes that the radiation risk from these scanners is miniscule, it does recommend that other scanning techniques should be considered.
In French airports, for example, an instrument called a wave body scanner is used to scan passengers.
Instead of being exposed to ionising radiations, travellers are exposed to an electromagnetic field from which there are "no proven health risks", the report says.
The report also recommends there should be signs warning people that they are about to be scanned and more guidance on how many times individuals should be asked to go back and forth through the scanners.

Yet the greater concern must be the UK public's increased exposure to radiation from medical procedures over the past decade.
The Health Protection Agency estimates that about 46 million medical and dental X-ray examinations were carried out across the UK in 2008, an increase of 10% since 1997.
The agency also reported a 140% increase in CT examinations over the same period.
Professor Richard Wakeford, a radiation epidemiologist, says that in 2009 the average US citizen was getting more radiation from medical processes than from natural background radiation.
The UK is certainly nowhere near that scenario yet, but Prof Wakeford is still concerned.
"The phenomenal increase in radiation from diagnostic medical sources shows no signs of abating at the moment - particularly with more technologically advanced procedures.
"CT scans are just a whole serious of X-rays slicing through you."
If Dr Aguirre was trying to make a point by refusing to submit to a body scan at Manchester Airport, his energies might be best directed elsewhere.

Mr Duncan Smith will say businesses are too quick to look abroad when they need staff UK businesses should recruit more unemployed young Britons rather than relying on labour from abroad, the work and pensions secretary is to say.
In a speech in Spain, Iain Duncan Smith will say that if government policy has prepared young people for work, "we need businesses to give them a chance".
Otherwise, he will say, they will be lost to dependency and hopelessness.
Official figures suggest almost 90% of the 400,000 jobs created in the UK in the past year went to foreign workers.
In 2007, then-Prime Minister Gordon Brown pledged to create "British jobs for British workers".
But he was widely criticised when it emerged that about 80% of the jobs created in the UK under Labour went to foreign migrants.
In a speech to the Spanish Foundation for Analysis and Social Studies in Madrid, Mr Duncan Smith will say that the government is determined to create an immigration system "that gives the unemployed a level playing field".
"If we do not get this right then we risk leaving more British citizens out of work, and the most vulnerable group who will be the most affected are young people," he will say.

BBC political correspondent Iain Watson says that as well as delivering a "blunt message to British employers", the speech will be directed at the Conservatives' coalition colleagues.
"Although the government as a whole has signed up to a cap on the number of migrants from outside the European Union, leading Liberal Democrats have been critical of some of the Conservatives' rhetoric on immigration," our correspondent says.
"The work and pensions secretary doesn't want the concerns over language to translate into a lack of commitment to the policy.
"He believes that his welfare reforms will succeed only if tough action is taken to enforce the rules on migration. Otherwise, he will say, another generation will be lost to dependency and hopelessness ."
Mr Duncan Smith will say that the previous Labour government's "slack attitude to immigration" has resulted in businesses being too quick to look abroad - including outside the EU - for staff.
He will say that while immigration "plays a vital role" in helping bridge certain skills gaps, there are many foreign nationals in low-skilled or semi-skilled jobs that could easily be done by unemployed Britons.
He will say that, in many cases, people gaining entry to the UK as high-skilled workers end up doing unskilled jobs once they are here.
"Good immigration is managed immigration. It should not be an excuse to import labour to take up posts which could be filled by people already in Britain," he will say.

Emma Merrilees and George Stewart were both involved in the attack organised by a 15-year-old boy A 15-year-old boy and a man have pled guilty to killing a young mother during a gang attack in West Lothian.
The teenager, who can't be named for legal reasons, and George Stewart, 34, admitted the culpable homicide of Nattalie Muir, 21, in Whitburn.
They are due to be sentenced at the High Court in Glasgow on 23 August.
Emma Merrilees, 20, has already admitted murdering Ms Muir, from Bathgate, by stabbing her in the heart on 11 December 2010.
The High Court in Livingston heard how the "devoted" young mother was stabbed through the heart in an attack organised by the 15-year-old boy.
Ms Muir had broken off her relationship with the teenager after getting pregnant by him and having a termination.
The youth, who cannot be named for legal reasons, repeatedly called her phone when he discovered she had the termination.
The single stab wound inflicted by Merrilees severed an artery causing her to bleed to death within minutes.
The injury was not survivable no matter what treatment was given, the court was told.
Advocate Depute Alex Prentice said Ms Muir began a four-month relationship with the under-age youth after she separated from her three-year-old's father, Thomas Thyne, in June last year.
Nattalie Muir's family said nothing would compensate for their loss In October, after the abortion, she resumed her relationship with Mr Thyne.
On the night she was killed, Ms Muir and Mr Thyne were both threatened by the 15-year-old and Stewart on the phone.
Stewart, Merrilees and the youth discussed going to Whitburn to "fight with" the couple.
Mr Prentice said: "George Stewart took an axe from the house and put it in the car. Emma Merrilees took a knife from the house.
"All of the accused set off in the knowledge that an axe and a knife were taken intending to inflict serious injury upon Thomas Thyne and Nattalie Muir.
"The fatal blow was delivered by Emma Merrilees who has pled guilty to murder."

The court heard how Ms Muir and Mr Thyne had gone out from a friend's house into the street in Whitburn after arguing.
She recognized a car pulling up beside them and told Mr Thyne to run for his life.
He was chased by the two male accused but got away.
Ms Muir was caught by Merrilees who punched her repeatedly on the head, seized hold of her hair and stabbed her in the chest.
Mr Prentice said a blind witness Barry Long, whose flat overlooks the scene, heard a woman threatening to stab another.
He then heard what is believed to be the deceased shouting "who are you, like?" before the car was driven off "at great speed".
Graham Sneddon, who got out of a taxi moments later found Ms Muir drifting in and out of consciousness.
Mr Prentice said: "He heard the deceased saying what he thought was the word 'beige', but is much more likely to have been her daughter's name 'Paige'.
"The deceased then informed Graham Sneddon that she had been stabbed and he phoned 999 for an ambulance."
Ian Duguid QC, defending the 15-year-old, said his client was "chronically immature" and could barely read and write.
He had the intellectual age of a seven or eight-year-old, he said.
"He has asked me to express his extreme remorse for the terrible consequences for someone who was particularly close to him at this point in time in his short life," Mr Duguid said.
Lord Matthews called for social inquiry reports on all three accused. "He was in a relationship with this girl when he was between the ages of 14 and 15 and the 'pestering' calls were inquiries about her decision to have a termination, which wasn't taken with any significant discussion, rather than malicious."
He added: "There was a certain element of drunken bravado which sadly resulted in someone losing their life.
"He is fundamentally appalled by the consequences of their combined actions that night."
Frank Gallacher, representing Stewart, said his client had also asked him to express his deep remorse.
John Keenan, for Merrilees, said his client felt "shock and remorse" for her actions.
Lord Matthews called for social inquiry reports on all three accused.
More than 25 friends and family members attended court to hear the guilty pleas.
Outside the court, Ms Muir's dad Callum, 41, read out a statement thanking the Crown Office, police and victim support staff for their help.
He added: "Nothing will compensate for the loss of our daughter.
"The continued support of family, friends and community shows how much she was thought of.
"We just want to get on with our lives and support our lovely wee granddaughter Paige."
