Deadmau5's Twitter Collaboration: DJ Uses Fan's Unsolicited Vocals on Song

Whether you're a fan of Deadmau5 or not, his latest move is pretty cool. This past weekend, the progressive house titan, known for his giant mouse costume head, began working on a new track titled 'The Veldt,' inspired by Ray Bradbury's sci-fi short story of the same name.

In typical fashion, Deadmau5 (born Joel Zimmerman) streamed the process live, letting fans watch as he sampled himself clapping his own ass for a drum sound and his cat bit a female friend. At the mention that he'd need to plot vocals for the instrumental, a fan named Chris James sang "some unique shoegaze-ish vocals over 'The Veldt,'" with lyrics inspired by Bradbury's subject matter, and tweeted it over to Deadmau5.

At the bidding of his followers, the Toronto DJ eventually gave the track a listen and responded quite enthusiastically.

"Dude... You F---ing Kidding Me???? God Damn!" he tweeted.

Continuing to stream live, Deadmau5 called James on the phone, made plans to officially release the track, got his manager on speakerphone and generally changed the fan's life.

"It's so rare that you get shit like that!" Deadmau5 exclaimed. "I feel like Simon Cowell. Dude that's f---in' awesome. It really is actually really good. Done. Let's make it a track dude. When my management hears this, they're gonna shit themselves."

Though the finished version with James' vocals has yet to leak, several fan-made versions are online now (replete with commentary by Deadmau5, as he saves and exports the track). Check one out here.

More evidence that daily aspirin dose cuts cancer risk

Aspirin just keeps looking better and better as an anti-cancer drug. Two papers published in The Lancet this week by Peter Rothwell of Oxford University find that the drug not only lowers older people's chance of developing cancer, but also slows the spread of cancer in patients who already have the disease.

The papers add to a growing body of literature on the drug's cancer-fighting ability. We reported last year that patients at high risk for colorectal cancer who took aspirin for two years had a 63 per cent reduction in developing cancer. John Burn of Newcastle University, UK, who led last year's study, speculated that aspirin might play a role in blocking inflammation and weakening the cancer's ability to spread - the new study suggests it may be aspirin's effects on platelets in the blood that slows the spread of cancer.

Rothwell's group found that middle-aged people who took aspirin daily for just three years had about a 25 per cent lower rate of developing cancer. Aspirin seems to be good for people who already have cancer as well, the group reports: cancer patients who took the drug daily for three years had a 15 per cent lower chance of dying from the disease; after five years, these patients were 37 per cent less likely to die than patients who were not on aspirin.

A second Lancet paper published this week by Rothwell's group found that the "wonder drug" could also prevent existing cancer from spreading to other organs. Cancer patients who took daily aspirin for 6.5 years had almost half the chance of their cancer spreading as those who weren't taking the drug.

It's not quite a miracle cure and shouldn't be prescribed to everyone, researchers warn, since it can damage the gut and cause intestinal bleeding. But researchers are trying to blunt those effects; a study earlier this month found that adding nitric oxide and hydrogen sulphide gases to aspirin increased its potency and helped it better target cancer cells while leaving normal gut cells alone.

Professionals Taking Advantage of Creative Marketing Opportunities ...

As noted in my recent post entitled Personal Branding: When the Professional is the Product, any provider of professional services who is interested in attracting and retaining clients must?differentiate herself and take control of the process through which perceptions are formed.? Possessing the requisite knowledge and expertise is not enough.? In today?s business environment, a professional must regularly engage and interact with her target audience and further influence how she is perceived by that audience.

There are of course many different initiatives through which a professional or her firm can influence perceptions and develop a distinctive brand identity.? For example, a law firm in New York recently participated in the International Restaurant & Foodservice Show of New York. ?The firm staffed a booth at this restaurant industry trade show, hosted a seminar on immigration issues in the restaurant business, and partnered with the Manhattan District Attorney?s Office for a discussion on how restaurants can avoid sexual harassment charges.? The firm paid about $10,000 to participate, excluding related expenses associated with travel and lost billable time.

Whether this particular opportunity will ultimately lead to additional business for this firm is difficult to predict and is dependent on many variables, including follow-up with the contacts that were made, whether those contacts have legal issues that they need outside counsel to address, whether those contacts address legal issues proactively or reactively, and numerous other factors.? But through the firm?s investment and participation in such an ?out of the box? business development opportunity, it undoubtedly improved its chances of attracting business from the industry that was targeted.? At a minimum, the initiative provided the professionals at the firm with a unique opportunity to meet business owners and operators in a targeted industry, ask questions about the issues that businesses in that industry find important, demonstrate their expertise in handling such issues, and affirm their commitment to supporting businesses in that industry.

In an era where information is shared in real time and delivered 24 hours a day, business relationships are cultivated both in person and online, and attributes like thought leadership have become increasingly important, professionals and their firms must take advantage of non-traditional business development opportunities in order to remain competitive and attract new business.? They must determine what industries and clients they want to target and commit resources to identifying, developing, executing and managing ?out of the box? marketing and business development initiatives.? These initiatives should be designed to not only generate relevant leads in a given industry, but also to engage prospective clients, increase the visibility of the professionals and their firms, and influence how the professionals and firms are perceived by the targeted industries.
