Home Care Services in Aurora, IL?

When choosing home health care for a homebound elderly individual, choices must be made by the patient and their family.

Essentially if there is no relative that can provide care-on-demand or perhaps around the clock home care, then outside services must be considered. In addition, if the patient requires specialized care such as physical or speech therapy a certified professional is necessary. Confer with your physician to make an informed choice.

Unfortunately, the cost of care is a huge consideration for most families. Medicare will pay for home care services on a short term basis, providing they are ordered by a physician. In addition, the plan of care must be reviewed by the physician regularly. Furthermore, the health care agency must be certified by Medicare.

Medicare will pay for the following services:

? ?Intermittent skilled nursing care (fewer than 7 days a week, less than 8 hours per day for a 21 day period)

? Physical therapy

? Speech-language pathology services

? Continued occupational therapy?

Medicare also requires a physician certification that the patient is homebound.

The doctor must recommend that the patient should not leave home due to their condition or the patient is unable to leave home without a wheelchair or walker, requires special transportation or must have help from another individual. The exception to this rule would be doctor visits or attending short religious services. If a patient attends an adult day care program they are still eligible for home health care.

Private duty home care is another option, particularly if the patient requires someone around the clock care or simply more hours than Medicare allows. Also, some patients require minimal care a few hours a week but no not fit the Medicare criteria. Look for an agency that is certified by the Private Duty Homecare Association.

Private duty home care is not covered by Medicare, so it is an out-of-pocket expense.

However, it often allows a loved one to stay in their home instead of moving to a nursing home. The trained staff will help with activities of daily living, assist with medications, provide companionship and they will assist with transportation accompanying the patient to their doctor visits.

A family should get a doctor?s recommendation as to the required care for their loved one, taking into consideration that Medicare services are covered and private home health care are a personal expense. The medical requirements of the patient will usually dictate the choice.
