Liver Disease And Being OverweightChildren's Health and Fitness ...

From Full Fact?..

Justifying the Lib Dem proposal to tax sugary drinks and sweets, Baroness Parminter voiced concerns about the effects of childhood obesity. But is one such effect, fatty liver disease, so prevalent that half a million children currently suffer from it?

?I am concerned by the timebomb that we have of obesity ? particularly among children; we have 500,000 children who have liver disease because of obesity.?

Speaking to the Telegraph yesterday, Liberal Democrat peer Baroness Parminter outlined one of her proposals to promote healthier and more sustainable lifestyles.

The motion to tax fizzy drinks and other unhealthy foods will be debated at the Lib Dem party conference in September. It is hoped the measure, if it becomes Government policy, would help tackle rising obesity among young people.

According to the Baroness, the problem has ballooned so much that there are now ?500,000 children who have liver disease? as a result of their weight.

But is this stat correct?

Analysis

There are several types of liver disease, including alcoholic liver disease and liver cancer. Obesity can cause a further type, fatty liver disease, a condition in which too much fat accumulates in the liver. Effects can lead to inflammation and liver scarring (cirrhosis).

As far as Full Fact is aware, there are no NHS statistics on the number of children diagnosed or being treated for fatty liver disease in the UK. So at first the Baroness?s claim seems difficult to pin down.
