Curiosity on Mars sits on rocks similar to those found in marshes in Mexico

Tuesday, October 30, 2012

Millions of years ago fire and water forged the gypsum rocks locked in at Cuatro Ci?negas, a Mexican valley similar to the Martian crater where NASA's Rover Curiosity roams. A team of researchers have now analysed the bacterial communities that have survived in these inhospitable springs since the beginning of life on Earth.

"Cuatro Ci?negas is extraordinarily similar to Mars. As well as the Gale crater where Curiosity is currently located on its exploration of the red planet, this landscape is the home to gypsum formed by fire beneath the seabed," as explained to SINC by Valeria Souza, evolutionary ecologist at the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM).

The researcher states that sulphur components from magma and minerals from the sea (carbonates and molecules with magnesium) are required to form gypsum. In the case of the Cuatro Ci?negas Basin, the magma under the seabed was very active. In fact, it allowed for the continent displacement during the Jurassic Period: "Here was where the supercontinent Pangea opened up some 200 million years ago, pushing the hemisphere north from the equator where it is now."

In the case of Mars, the scientists have not been able to confirm tectonic movement in its crust at any point, but they believe that a large meteorite crashed into its primitive sea. The fact that probing has detected gypsum in the Gale crater indicates that mineral-rich water was present and that sulphur was able to form due to the impact of the meteorite causing the crater.

It is no easy task to find a place on Earth similar to this Martian environment, except in Cuatro Ci?negas. For this reason astrobiologists toil in their work to understand how its bacterial communities work. "This oasis in the middle of the Chihuahua desert is a time machine for organisms that, together as a community, have transformed our blue planet yet have survived all extinctions. How they have managed to do this can be revealed by their genes," says Souza.

The team have analysed the 'metagenomes', the genome of the different bacterial communities that proliferate in these marshes by adapting parallel strategies to overcome survival challenges in a place with so little nutrients.

Green, red and blue springs

The results published in the journal 'Astrobiology' journal reflect the existence of two communities in different pits for example. One is 'green' and is formed by cyanobacteria and proteobacteria that have adapted to the lack of nitrogen. Another is 'red' and is made of Pseudomonas and other micro-organisms that live without hardly any phosphorous. There are also blue springs which are generally deeper and lacking in nutrients.

"Understanding the usage and exploitation strategies of phosphorous is necessary in understanding what could happen in extreme scenarios like on other planets where there is a possibly serious limitation to this and other nutrients," explains Luis David Alcaraz, Mexican researcher participating in the study from the Higher Public Health Research centre of Valencia, Spain.

This project has enjoyed the support of Mexico's Carlos Slim Foundation and the Technological Innovation Research Project Support Programme of UNAM. It has also received the support of the National Science Foundation (NSF) of the USA and NASA, which has been studying Cuatro Ci?negas for more than a decade.

The Cuatroci?negas Flora and Fauna Protection Area is a protected area but the scientists and conservation groups are worried that its water is being over exhausted. "The bacterial communities have survived all types of cataclysms here such as the extinction of the dinosaurs or the majority of marine creatures. But, the only thing they are not adapted for is the lack of water," warns Souza.

Steve Ballmer returns triumphantly to Microsoft ads for Windows Phone 8, now with less Crazy Eddie (video)

Steve Ballmer makes his triumphant return to Microsoft ads for Windows Phone 8, this time with less Crazy Eddie video

The last time we saw Steve Ballmer star in a commercial for Microsoft, he was extolling the virtues of a 286-based PC running the glory that was Windows 1.0 -- in 1986. You can imagine the surprise we got 26 years later when Microsoft premiered an ad featuring the now-CEO during its Windows Phone 8 event. If you were expecting that same kind of unbridled enthusiasm Crazy Eddie once used to hawk underpriced TVs, you may be either pleased or disappointed. It's a very level-headed and well-spoken Ballmer this time around, with the executive calmly highlighting the advice he gets through his HTC Windows Phone 8X from people like his wife and a certain Billy G. Besides evoking nostalgia, the pitch is an illustration of what Windows Phone's live tiles can do as well as a reflection of Microsoft coming full circle -- as it was two decades ago, Redmond is fighting for market attention at a time when new interface concepts are challenging its main business. We're just glad there's fewer plaid business suits in 2012.

Stressed-Out Parents More Likely To Serve Up Fast FoodYour ...

From The Hindustan Times?..

Stressed-out parents were found to be more likely to serve their children fast food, and, perhaps not surprisingly, more likely to have obese kids. The study, published on Monday in the journal Pediatrics, looked at survey responses from 2,119 parents and caregivers of kids ranging in age from 3
to 17. The researchers then measured stress based on self-reported data from the respondents.

?Stress in parents may be an important risk factor for child obesity and related behaviors,? said Dr. Elizabeth Prout-Parks, a physician nutrition specialist at The Children?s Hospital of Philadelphia, who led the study. ?The severity and number of stressors are important.?

Some of the stressors weighing heavily on parents with obese children included poor physical and mental health, money woes, and being a single parent ? the last factor having the strongest link to child obesity. Although previous research has found a connection between parental stress and child obesity, the researchers say that their study covered a more diverse population, both ethnically and socioeconomically, than did previous studies.

When Obama Loved Private Equity

President Obama has spent much of the past six months hammering away at Mitt Romney's career in the private equity business, but for a time, as a state senator in Illinois, Obama sang the praises of the private equity sector, saying it offered "the best opportunity for economic vitality" in Illinois.

"As many of you know venture capital and private equity is one of the key mechanisms by which we finance new businesses in the state of Illinois," state Sen. Obama said in a speech before the Illinois Senate on May 30, 2003. "For a variety of reasons, Illinois has been lagging behind some of our competitor states in the formation of venture capital and its deployment in terms of seeding and funding new companies."

To help make Illinois more competitive in attracting venture capital, Obama proposed the formation of a special task force on private equity - and made it clear he was doing it at the request of those in the business.

"This is an issue that has piqued the interest of various persons in the industry, and so they have asked that we form this Private Equity Task Force to examine these issues," Obama said, according to an Illinois Senate transcript from May 2003.

Here's a link to the transcript (Senator Obama's speech begins on page 161)

The task force was created with Senate Resolution 89, a bill offered by then Sen. Obama that described private equity as the key driver of the state's economy.

"The development of the private equity sector of the Illinois economy," the resolution said, "offers the best opportunity for long-term economic vitality, for the expansion of jobs, for the improvement of productivity and a quality standard of living, and for providing the greatest number of citizens with genuine opportunity."

There was no mention of Bain Capital, but it sounds like something a former chairman of Bain Capital would embrace without hesitation.

The resolution passed by a vote of 56-0.

Florida college band member gets probation in hazing death

ORLANDO, Florida (Reuters) - A former Florida A&M University band member was sentenced on Monday to six months of house arrest and two years of probation in the hazing death of college drum major Robert Champion, who was fatally beaten during a marching band ritual last fall.

Judge Marc Lubet also ordered Brian Jones, 23, to complete 200 hours of community service and a four-hour hazing class. The judge withheld adjudication, meaning Jones will not have a felony conviction on his record.

"I think you're worth saving," Lubet said during the hearing attended by Champion's parents in Orlando.

Lubet said Jones, who faced up to five years in prison after pleading no contest earlier this month to a third-degree felony of hazing causing injury or death, was a "relatively minor participant" in his band mate's beating.

Jones was the first of 12 former members of the historically black college's "Marching 100" band to face sentencing for felony hazing charges filed in Champion's death. The others have pleaded not guilty.

Champion, 26, died in a hazing ritual during a band trip to Orlando on November 19, 2011. His death was ruled a homicide as a result of a hemorrhagic shock caused by blunt force trauma during the hazing on a chartered bus, according to the medical examiner's report.

On Monday, prosecutor Nicole Pegues said two witnesses put Jones at the scene, and one of the witnesses said Jones gave Champion a bear hug.

Champion's mother held a framed picture of her son as she spoke directly to Jones during the hearing.

"How long can you obscure the truth and straddle the fence and keep up the delusion of innocence and live this lie?" Pam Champion asked him.

She told Jones that no matter what sentence the judge handed down, her son's death would "always be there haunting you."

"You and I both know you will never get away," she said. "It will always be with you."

Jones said he hoped the Champion family would find strength in God but didn't mention any specifics about his involvement in the incident.

"It went further than anyone could imagine," he said.

A status hearing for the other 11 defendants is set for March 1, according to prosecution spokeswoman Anna Akers. No trial dates have been scheduled.

The famed band in Tallahassee has been on suspension since Champion's death, and the university president and the band director have resigned.

The Champion family has filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the school. The university is seeking to get the suit dismissed, arguing in court papers that Robert Champion volunteered to be hazed in a bid to gain respect from fellow band members.

(AP) ? Clashes in Beirut and other parts of Lebanon killed at least two people and left more than a dozen wounded overnight as fears grow that Syria's civil war is spilling over into its smaller neighbor, security officials and state-run media said Monday.

The latest spasms of violence came amid rising tension between Lebanese groups that support and oppose the regime of Syrian President Bashar Assad and in the wake of the assassination last week of a top anti-Syrian intelligence official in Lebanon.

Most of Lebanon's Sunnis have backed Syria's mainly Sunni rebels, while Lebanese Shiites tend to back Assad. The Syrian president, like many who dominate his regime, is a member of the Alawite sect, an offshoot of Shiite Islam.

Lebanese Brig. Gen. Wissam al-Hassan, who was killed in a car bomb in an east Beirut neighborhood on Friday, was a Sunni who challenged Syria and Hezbollah.

His assassination has threatened to shatter Lebanon's fragile political balance. Many politicians have blamed Syria for the killing and angry protesters tried to storm the government palace after al-Hassan's funeral Sunday but were pushed back by troops who opened fire in the air and fired tear gas.

Overnight, Sunni and Shiite gunmen clashed in two Beirut neighborhoods and officials also reported heavy clashes late Sunday and early Monday in the northern city of Tripoli and towns between Beirut and the southern city of Sidon.

The officials, speaking on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to talk to the media, said a man was killed in shooting in the Wadi Zayneh area north of Sidon and another person died in the Tripoli clashes. The officials said the clashes wounded at least six people in Beirut and 10 in Tripoli.

An Associated Press photographer saw dozens of gunmen roaming the streets Monday of Beirut's predominantly Sunni neighborhood of Tariq Jadideh, where much of the fighting had taken place. Local Sunni leaders were calling the gunmen by telephone urging them to pull out of the streets.

In some roads around Tariq Jadideh, masked Sunni gunmen set up checkpoints, stopping cars and asking people about their destination and where they were coming from.

A woman who lives in the neighborhood said the fighting began shortly after midnight and lasted until sunrise.

"We couldn't sleep because of the shooting. There were also some booms," she said, referring to rocket-propelled grenades. She asked that her name not be mused for fear of reprisals.

In Tripoli, residents said scores of soldiers deployed around the city in an attempt to bring back calm. The military also set up checkpoints, searched cars and asked people for identity cards.

Best Financial Markets Analysis Article8-minute video by EWI's Currency Specialty Service editor shows you how the Elliott wave concept of "waves within waves" allows you to find both the short- AND long-term trends.

In mid-July, AUD/USD, the exchange rate between the U.S. and Australian dollar (and a popular forex pair) was trading near 1.0100.

But Elliott wave analysis told EWI's Currency Specialty Service editor, Jim Martens, to expect a big rally: all the way to 1.05, at least.

Three weeks later, AUD/USD indeed rose to that target -- and then some. On August 7, AUD/USD hit a high of 1.0600 -- a 400-pip rally.

There is a lot more to this story.

Watch the entire 8-minute video Jim Martens recorded for his subscribers on July 13. It's a great lesson in using Elliott to find multiple trading opportunities at various degrees of trend.

Why American Small Businesses Need Mitt Romney - Jovita ...

Click if you like this column!

Small businesses are the foundation of our nation's economy. They employ about half of all private-sector employees, and they create nearly two-thirds of all new jobs.

But small businesses and entrepreneurs are suffering in the Obama economy. And they're starving for new leadership in the White House that will give them the freedom they need to do what they do best: grow and hire more workers.

They haven't had that leadership for the last four years. President Obama's policies have devastated small-business owners and entrepreneurs since he took office. Those policies have driven up the cost of doing business in the United States. Obamacare has caused health insurance costs to rise, while plunging our businesspeople into regulatory uncertainty. The next four years promise even worse to come, with the president's threatened tax subjecting 2.1 million business owners to higher taxes and jeopardizing 710,000 jobs.

If his policies weren't bad enough, President Obama's insulting "you didn't build that - somebody else made that happen" comments only further underscore that he doesn't know the first thing about how the economy works or how to create jobs in the real world.

This should be especially concerning for our nation's 7.8 million women business owners, more than three-quarters of a million of whom are Latina.

Given how disastrous his policies have been during his first term in office, it's no wonder President Obama and his allies have been doing everything possible to distract Latinas from the issues that matter most to us: jobs and the economy.

During the most recent presidential debate, for example, President Obama referenced birth control and abortion - but never talked about the 451,000 more women who are unemployed today than when he took office. Under President Obama, the unemployment rate for women has increased from 7.0 percent to 7.5 percent, and 5.5 million women are now unemployed. The unemployment rate for Hispanics is even higher and has hovered around 10 percent for 45 months; more than 2.4 million Latinos are out of work.

No wonder President Obama didn't discuss these topics during the town hall debate in New York.

This may be the best President Obama can do, but it's not the best America can do. I know because I've had the opportunity to live the American dream. I was born to first-generation Mexican-American parents, and I started my career at UPS in 1976 as a part-time clerk. Through hard work and determination, I was able to work my way up the ladder to vice president of the company's air operations.

'Women in Binders,' other Internet memes trump voter issues

??Like "Fired Big Bird," "Women in Binders" is spreading another negative Romney message so simple and crafty, suspicious types might wonder if it came from inside the Obama campaign. Greek strike turns violent: 'Enough is enough'

Thanassis Stavrakis / AP

Protesters throw gas bombs at riot police officers during a 24-hour nationwide general strike in Athens on Thursday.

By NBC News and wire services

ATHENS - Greek police clashed with anti-austerity protesters hurling stones and gasoline bombs on the day of a general strike that brought much of the near-bankrupt country to a standstill.

In the second major walkout in three weeks on Thursday, almost 40,000 protesters marched in Athens in a bid to show EU leaders meeting in Brussels that new wage and pension cuts will only worsen their plight after five years of recession.

Tensions mounted when a small group of protesters began throwing pieces of marble, bottles and gas bombs at police barricading part of the square in front of parliament, prompting riot police to fire several rounds of teargas to disperse them.

A 65-year old protester died of a heart attack, hospital sources told Reuters. Greek media, however, were reporting the man was tear-gassed, the BBC?s correspondent in Athens, Mark Lowen reported.

Riot police use tear gas and stun grenades in response to fire bombs and bottles thrown by protesters during a demonstration against austerity cuts in Greece. NBCNews.com's Dara Brown reports.

Another three people were injured. Police detained about 50 protesters suspected of attacking them.

Most business and public sector activity ground to a halt at the start of the 24-hour strike called by the country's two biggest labor unions, ADEDY and GSEE.

PhotoBlog: Striking Greeks clash with police

"Enough is enough. They've dug our graves, shoved us in and we are waiting for the priest to read the last words," said Konstantinos Balomenos, a 58-year-old worker at a water utility whose wage has been halved to 900 euros and who has two unemployed sons.

It was the third time since late September that tens of thousands of Greeks have taken to the streets holding banners and chanting slogans to show their anger at austerity policies imposed by EU and IMF lenders in exchange for aid.

Thousands of Greeks protest Angela Merkel visit

Some were carrying Greek, Spanish and Portuguese flags and shouted: "EU, IMF out".

"Agreeing to catastrophic measures means driving society to despair and the consequences as well as the protests will then be indefinite," said Yannis Panagopoulos, head of the GSEE private sector union, one of two major unions that represent about 2 million people, or half of Greece's workforce.

Greece is stuck in its worst downturn since World War Two and must make at least 11.5 billion euros of cuts to satisfy the "troika" of the European Commission, European Central Bank and IMF, and secure the next tranche of a 130-billion-euro bailout.

Lenders demand austerity
European Union leaders will try to bridge their differences over plans for a banking union at a two-day summit which starts on Thursday. No substantial decisions are expected, reviving concerns about complacency in tackling the debt crisis which exploded three years ago in Greece.?

Christine Lagarde, IMF managing director, says she would rather have a difficult, yet a credible program for Greece.

The austerity policies being pursued in Europe's indebted Mediterranean countries at the behest of Germany and other rich euro zone members will drive the euro apart, protesters warned.

"This can't go on. We sure need measures but not as tough as the ones (German Chancellor Angela) Merkel is asking for," said Dimitris Mavronassos, a 40-year-old shipyard worker who has not been paid for six months.

The strike emptied streets and offices in Athens. Ships stayed in port, Athens public transport was disrupted and hospitals were working with emergency staff, while public offices, ministries, bakeries and other shops were shut.

Newspaper kiosk owners, lawyers, taxi drivers and air traffic controllers were among those protesting over the cuts, which include further drastic reductions in welfare and health spending.

Rising anger
Opinion polls show rising anger with the terms of the bailout keeping the economy afloat, and Greeks becoming increasingly pessimistic about their country's future.?

"The new, painful package should not be passed," the ADEDY public sector union said in a statement.

"The new demands will only finish off what's left of our labor, pension and social rights."

But with Greece due to run out of money next month, Athens has little choice but to push through the austerity package being discussed with lenders.

Greece and inspectors from the troika say they have agreed on most issues. Athens is expected to secure aid needed to avoid bankruptcy given EU determination to avoid fresh market turmoil threatening bigger economies such as Spain and Italy.

But the protests are expected to increase pressure on Greece's fragile three-party coalition cobbled together in June to implement the harsh austerity terms under its international 130-billion euro bailout agreed in March.

Emboldened by the strikes, the main opposition Syriza party turned up the heat on the government.

"Their time is running out," said the party's 38-year old leader Alexis Tsipras who took part in the march.

"People are taking matters into their own hands."

This Isn't Just About Academic Disagreement; It's About Bullying

How should we teach math in American schools?

That?s a simple question with no easy answer.

Some say memorization and constant drilling is the key. (e.g. Memorize the times table, learn the FOIL method in algebra, do the shortcut to calculating a derivative in Calculus, figure out how to multiply fractions and then do the same kind of problem 213781 times, etc.) I?m sure a lot of you learned math that way. I did for a good part of my education, too.

Others say that method only leads to students who think they can do math but who don?t really understand it. They might be able to pass a class but they can?t do any sort of higher-level thinking. They go ?a mile wide and an inch deep.?

This group?s alternative suggestion is very popular in the math world right now. It?s the basis of the Common Core curriculum (PDF) many states are now adapting. It?s a theory that says kids are better off working on a couple of long problems than several short ones. It?s a theory that tries to get kids to stop asking, ?When are we ever going to use this in life?? by creating relevant problems instead of obviously contrived ones. It?s a theory that says there?s not always one right way to get an answer even if there?s only one right answer and we ought to explore several of them. It?s a theory that encourages students to talk through the methods they used to solve a problem with their classmates to get a better understanding of the subject.

(You can take a wild guess as to which theory I support.)

This is also the theory espoused by Dr. Jo Boaler, a professor and researcher of mathematics education at Stanford University and the author of the excellent book What?s Math Got to Do with It?: How Parents and Teachers Can Help Children Learn to Love Their Least Favorite Subject:

Jo Boaler

Boaler has spent years researching what works and what doesn?t in math classrooms, in America and abroad. She has published many peer-reviewed papers on the subjects of gender and racial equality when it comes to math education. She?s well respected in the field.

And she?s the subject of harassment in the academic community.

This goes well beyond disagreements with her ideas. We?re talking about people trying to destroy her academic credentials because they don?t like what she represents: A threat to the old way of doing things.

Boaler revealed the depths of the bullying on her website today:

Since joining the faculty of Stanford University in 1998 I have experienced fierce personal and professional attacks from two mathematicians ? James Milgram (Stanford, retired) and Wayne Bishop (CSU, Northridge). Milgram and Bishop are opposed to reforms of mathematics teaching and support the continuation of a model in which students learn mathematics without engaging in realistic problems or discussing mathematical methods. They are, of course, entitled to this opinion, and there has been an ongoing, spirited academic debate about mathematics learning for a number of years. But Milgram and Bishop have gone beyond the bounds of reasoned discourse in a campaign to systematically suppress empirical evidence that contradicts their stance. Academic disagreement is an inevitable consequence of academic freedom, and I welcome it. However, responsible disagreement and academic bullying are not the same thing. Milgram and Bishop have engaged in a range of tactics to discredit me and damage my work which I have now decided to make public.

What sort of things are Milgram and Bishop doing? They tried to block her from becoming a professor at the school in 2010. They?re saying that she fabricated some of her research, a claim that was investigated and found to be untrue. They all-but-spelled out some of her research subjects ? students and teachers and their schools ? despite the fact that confidentiality is of the utmost importance in these studies. They wrote a paper (PDF) (that was never peer-reviewed or published) in order to discredit her work.

Again, Stanford officials looked at their claims years ago and found them to be utterly baseless. Yet, they persist on spreading the rumors, anyway.

Who knew character assassination was the way researchers hammered out their differences? And at such a great school, no less?! It?d be shocking if it weren?t so sad.

For now, there?s been no response from Milgram or Bishop. But I hope Boaler comes out of this unscathed, able to continue her important research without the distraction of ?colleagues? hellbent on discrediting her work. Like all good researchers, she?s up for a spirited debate on the issues and seems more than willing to engage her detractors. What she?s having to respond to, though, is an attack on her character instead of her theories. That type of defamation has no place in academia.

The Effect of Exercise on Stress and Anxiety - My Phenom Fitness

It is well known that exercise is one of many great stress relief techniques that bring numerous advantages and improvements to one?s physical health. But are you aware that exercise also affect one?s mental function and is beneficial when dealing with anxiety? In particular, those who suffer from stress and anxiety may find that taking an active part in an exercise program can help them when dealing with anxiety and can be great for stress relief techniques. How is this possible?

Mental health experts believe that often times, anxiety not only brings excess tension to the body, but that anxiety also weighs on our emotions, adding to the stress experienced. As the body remains tensed, the mind also becomes cluttered and overwhelmed because of this.? One way to help clear this up is through regular exercise. Doing basic routines releases body chemicals and hormones that will help reduce stress and tension. The mind and body can then become relaxed, which can be very helpful when dealing with anxiety. Thus, this leads to a diminished feeling of anxiousness which is why exercise is one of many great stress relief techniques that you can implement in your life.

Below are just some of the exercises you can do as a form of stress relief techniques. These exercises will be great in dealing with anxiety that you may have.

Stress Relief Techniques #1: Cardio Boxing
One of many very effective stress relief techniques is to do cardio boxing.? Pounding and punching on the bags are helpful because it can release pent up emotions and frustrations and can, as a result, be very effective when dealing with anxiety. The actions work like this catharsis that opens up clogged thoughts and takes away all the tension in the body. As soon as you?re done with the routine, you will see that you will feel lighter and less anxious, and the stress felt will be reduced. This is one of many beneficial stress relief techniques that can aid you in dealing with anxiety.

Stress Relief Techniques #2: Walking
Whether you?re doing walking exercises on the treadmill or simply walking outside, walking can help with tension relief. We often tell people who are very angry and argumentative to take a walk to clear their mind because it frequently can help in the dealing with anxiety that they may have. This works in the same principle because the mind can focus on other things. Exercise does not need to be intense to have great benefits, and any physical activity, such as something as simple as this (walking) can deliver results and be of great help when dealing with anxiety in your life. It truly is amazing how simple stress relief techniques such as walking can help when dealing with anxiety.

Stress Relief Techniques #3: Yoga and Stretching
Yoga, stretching and similar stress relief techniques can provide anxiety relief, just as much as other forms of exercises. Even if these routines have low intensity, the mere fact that your body and mind puts focus on doing something, they can help take your mind off your worries and help in dealing with anxiety. Plus, these routines also offer a calming effect that withers away stress and tension. With yoga routines most especially, this method works behind the idea that the body and the mind should create a balance. If one is distracted or in pain, the person cannot function properly.

Other than our physical well-being, there are other aspects to health that one should take care of, such as our mental or emotional well-being and our dental health. Read up on tips and guides to maintaining good dental health at http://bracescostinfo.com.
