Autoblography Part 18: Drills - Twenty Sided

I am fifteen years old, attending eighth grade. It?s 1985. My brother Daniel is born. Back to the Future will premiere later this year.

I?m still in the Special Education program, although I don?t have any Special Ed classes. My Special Ed handler looks at my grades, and my test results, and then works with me to figure out where I might need help and where I might benefit from more direct instruction. I really like having an adult speak with me and involve me in my education like this, instead of being shoved around the system like a bit of paperwork.

I find myself attracted to the Special Ed classes, because I feel much more relaxed in the smaller groups, and also because the work is so dang easy. I also enjoy having an adult engage me directly. I am content to slack off and remain in Special Ed, perhaps even hoping that I?ll get pulled out of a few regular classes and put into Special Education curriculum.

I?m a bit more socially developed, and it?s easier for adults to judge my intelligence by talking to me. My teacher is also armed with my standardized test scores, and she is too wise to fall for my slacking. She can see clearly that there is a massive disparity between my ability and my performance. That gap might have been muddled in those years when I had a bad home life, intense social dysfunction, and a nervous system full of drugs, but it?s pretty clear now that my scholastic failures have nothing to do with me finding the material to be too difficult.

The disparity is most pronounced in the area of mathematics, where my tests suggest I should be in advanced classes and my grades suggest that I am an imbecile. Part of this is due to the fact that standardized tests often lump ?logic? in with math, which greatly elevates my mathematical performance, but most of the problem is due to that fact that math is taught through drills.

Before I got my own computer, I spent about half a year visiting my friend David and learning to program on his Texas Instruments computer. On that machine, you created graphics by using hexadecimal numbers, which represented binary patterns, which mapped directly to patterns of pixels. If you wanted to make a smiley face like this one:

You would do so by looking at the things in groups of four dots. For the first four, I want a zero, followed by three ones, to represent the empty space followed by three colored squares. In hex, that?s represented by a 7. The next four dots is three colored squares followed by an empty one, which is an E. Going down the image, it means this smiley is represented by the sequence: 7E81A581A599817E

When I was first learning about this, I had to keep consulting a chart in the manual that explained it. With practice, I found myself visiting the chart less often, until I had all of the required patterns memorized. Now I can construct these graphics in my head, a skill I will retain for the rest of my life. This means I can convert between the binary and hexadecimal number systems at will. I also understand binary numbers and binary counting. I didn?t set out to learn any of this. It all happened naturally, as I learned larger things. It?s simply a tool, like any other.

If I?d learned these graphics the way math is taught, then I would have spent three weeks doing worksheets and taking tests to establish and confirm my hexadecimal skills before I was allowed to put them to use or even know what the skill was for. It would have been endless drills with no discernible goal. It would be like learning to be a carpenter by spending six weeks driving nails into a lone piece of wood before anyone showed you that the nails could be used to assemble something.

As far as I can tell, math is boring, tedious, repetitive, and useless. It?s endless sheets of busywork with no goal or purpose.

A few people encourage me to seek the harder math courses, and to my ruin I ignore their advice. To me, math is ?hard? because of how boring and time-consuming it is. Homework usually consists of doing the same problem forty times in a row! Then tomorrow, we will do forty more of the exact same problem, except with one extra digit of complexity thrown in. The pages march by, an endless procession of mind-numbing paperwork, a treadmill of uninteresting problems. I assume, incorrectly, that if a class is ?harder? it will simply be the exact same lessons, except there will be even more homework and additional digits of complexity. (Which never makes any sense to me. Once I can multiply a pair of two-digit numbers I can also multiply twenty-digit numbers. Adding more digits just feels like belaboring the point to me.)

What I fail to understand is that the ?harder? classes are where math becomes far more interesting. Instead of forty dull problems, they give you five interesting ones. Instead of pointless drills, you can begin to see how to use math as a tool. They finally give you a pile of two-by-fours and let you start nailing things together. I can put part of the blame on my terrible elementary school experience and my lack of trust in the system. I can put part of the blame on the shameful, idiotic way in which lower math is taught. I could try to pin some of the blame on people like Mrs. Grossman, who made the subject such a chore. But the truth is that most of the blame falls on me. I?m about to miss out on some really valuable and interesting learning because I?m afraid of a little work.

So despite the suggestions of the adults, I stick to the easy math classes, thus dooming myself to a slow purgatory of non-learning. I take ?Basic Math? instead of ?Algebra I?. Basic Math is just a repetition of what we learned in elementary school: Addition, subtraction, multiplication, and long division. Next year I?ll take ?Elementary Algebra I? and ?Elementary Algebra II?, which will dilute the already slow-paced introduction of ?Algebra I? into a full year of tedium. This mistake will haunt me for the rest of my school career, and it won?t be until I?m close to graduation that I?ll even be aware of just how badly I screwed up. It won?t be my senior year that I will discover the extreme utility of trigonometry and curse myself for passing up the chance to learn it instead of simply sleepwalking my way through another algebra class.

There were a lot of blunders in my school career. A lot of people wronged me, mistreated me, neglected me, or hurt me with their incompetence. But this particular screwup was mine.

Everyone knows how to paint over a room, but some tend to forget the simple task of covering their borders, window frames, and doors. These areas require just as much preparation as you would need for your wall. However, since the borders often cover a smaller surface, it takes much less time to get them ready.

There are a couple of extra things you may want to do with borders, though, so pay attention to these preparation tips below.

? Take all nails and screws out. If there is anything jutting out of the border, remove it.

? Remove any chipped paint or border paper. Make sure your surface is smooth so the paint will show up evenly.

? Fill any holes or cracks in your border. When you are done with this step, sand everything down so it doesn?t look tacky.

? Scrub your border clean and remove as much dirt and grime as you can. If necessary, break out your vacuum and suck up smaller dust particles. They can gather in the paint and cause clumping.

? Use a small paint brush for paint application. A roller or any brush that is too wide is definitely not advisable for this task.

Some articles recommend the use of a Paint Zoom, but this may be one that the paint sprayer, Paint Zoom can?t quite take care of. Attempting to use this product on a thin border or frame can prove to be nearly impossible to do without a mess. It is one of the few Paint Zoom problems. Other than using them for frames and border linings, you can use them for doors, provided that you have the proper protection so the paint won?t spread out.

Arkansas insurance commissioner seeks exchange support

Arkansas? top insurance official is asking lawmakers to support the state?s application for a nearly $3.8 million dollar grant to begin planning for a key part of the federal health care overhaul.

Arkansas Insurance Commissioner Jay Bradford told a legislative panel on Monday that the state won?t apply for the grant to plan for a health insurance exchange without the Legislature?s support. Friday is the application deadline.

The health care law created new marketplaces for insurance known as exchanges that will open for business in 2014. A bill authorizing Arkansas to set up its exchange stalled in the Legislature earlier this year.

The state House?s top Republican says Democratic Gov. Mike Beebe doesn?t need legislative support to apply for the grant. Bradford said Beebe wouldn?t go forward without lawmakers? backing.

Division rivals meet up in Week 3 of NFL (AP)

There's a meeting of undefeateds on this week's schedule. In Buffalo, of all places.

That's right, the Patriots, who almost always seem to start 2-0, face the spotless Bills, who rarely sniff such rarefied air. It's one of eight games featuring division matchups, and perhaps the most enticing one.

"This is the greatest opportunity we'll have," Bills running back Fred Jackson said of ending a 15-game losing streak against New England that dates to 2003. "They're a great team, but we feel like we're a great team. ... It will be a good test and a measuring stick for us."

Everyone gets measured against the Patriots, who haven't lost in the regular season since last Nov. 7, a span of 10 games. Their offense has been unstoppable thus far with Tom Brady throwing for 940 yards and seven TDs as New England put up 73 points ? second only to ... Buffalo.

One group not quite sold on the Bills: the bookmakers, who have New England a 9-point favorite.

"I can honestly tell you I never even look at it. When the game starts it's 0-0," Patriots coach Bill Belichick said. "There's no favorite. There's no underdog."

Well, after 15 straight wins over a team, that's hardly accurate.

"You hear a lot about how they've had our number," Bills linebacker Chris Kelsay. "That's fine and dandy to the outsiders. But we have a lot of confidence with guys in this room, and we're not going to lay down for anybody. We're preparing to win this game."

The other divisional games have Green Bay at Chicago and Detroit at Minnesota in the NFC North; the New York Giants at Philadelphia and Washington at Dallas (Monday night) in the NFC East; Atlanta at Tampa Bay in the NFC South; Kansas City at San Diego in the AFC West; and Arizona at Seattle in the NFC West.

Also Sunday, it's Houston at New Orleans; Pittsburgh at Indianapolis; Baltimore at St. Louis; the New York Jets at Oakland; Jacksonville at Carolina; San Francisco at Cincinnati; Denver at Tennessee; and Miami at Cleveland.

Green Bay (2-0) at Chicago (1-1)

Lest we forget, the Bears won the division a year ago and hosted the Packers for the NFC championship. Also, lest we forget, the Pack won that game and then the Super Bowl.

Green Bay keeps winning even as it loses key players, a formula that didn't hurt in 2010. Now safety Nick Collins (neck) is gone for the year.

"It's tough," Packers coach Mike McCarthy said. "We've been through the injury stuff before, but it's something you never get used to as a head coach."

You do get used to a lot of winning, and a Pack victory here puts the Bears in chase mode. Chicago must find a way to protect Jay Cutler, who was sacked six times in a loss at New Orleans.

Detroit (2-0) at Minnesota (0-2)

No team has roared out of the gate like the Lions, whose 75-23 points differential tops the league. While most everyone is lauding the Lions' offense, that 23 and a No. 7 ranking on defense might be more impressive.

Minnesota led San Diego and Tampa Bay late in both of its defeats. Despite calls in the Twin Cities to bench Donovan McNabb, the Vikings won't be, uh, throwing Christian Ponder to the Lions, who are favored in Minnesota for the first time in three decades.

New York Giants (1-1) at Philadelphia (1-1)

If Michael Vick (concussion) can't go, the Eagles will need similar heroics to what they got from DeSean Jackson the last time these archrivals met. Philly has plenty of playmakers for third-stringer Mike Kafka if he is behind center, while the Giants can't seem to keep key players healthy and their depth has been tested everywhere.

New York's latest woes, other than sparking a league memo to teams not to fake injuries to stop play, include a concussion for wideout Mario Manningham and the loss of fellow receiver Dominek Hixon (right knee) for the season.

Washington (2-0) at Dallas (1-1)

A victory for the Redskins will validate their quick start and make them a factor in the NFC East, where they were projected as tailenders. Washington seems to have cleared up its porous rushing defense of previous years, and coach Mike Shanahan has ramped up the Skins' intensity.

Dallas has performed well in spots, and also has made some awful plays. QB Tony Romo has been at the center of most of the good ? and bad ? and he was plagued by a cracked rib and punctured lung while finishing off San Francisco in overtime last Sunday.

Juicing up this bitter rivalry: Washington CB DeAngelo Hall saying he will go after Romo's sore spot.

"If you know something's wrong with an opponent, you're going to try to target in on that," Hall said. "We're going to try to definitely get as many hats on that team as possible."

Atlanta (1-1) at Tampa Bay (1-1)

Each team needs to shore up on defense, the Bucs against the run and the Falcons versus the pass. Which means Tampa Bay quarterback Josh Freeman and Atlanta running back Michael Turner could have field days.

Freeman's much-noted stat of leading a winning drive in the fourth quarter or overtime eight times in 27 career games means no lead is safe. Tampa Bay trailed 17-0 at Minnesota a week ago.

"He's smart, he takes coaching well," coach Raheem Morris said. "He's cool, he's calm, he's poised, and that's when he plays his best."

Kansas City (0-2) at San Diego (1-1)

No team has been more ragged or routed than Kansas City, which lost 41-7 to Buffalo and 48-3 at Detroit. Now the Chiefs, minus RB Jamaal Charles, their best offensive player who is out for the season with a torn left knee ligament, face the division favorite ? not that San Diego has been a world beater thus far.

Kansas City has turned over the ball nine times, on pace for 72 turnovers, which would easily be an NFL record.

"If you're turning the ball over in this league, you're going to end up paying for it," said San Diego coach Norv Turner. "And they're turning the ball over an awful lot and giving teams short fields."

Arizona (1-1) at Seattle (0-2)

The Seahawks can give the Chiefs a run for NFL bottom-feeder with an offense that ranks last and has gained 451 yards in two games; Tom Brady has thrown for more than that in one outing. If they hope to defend their division crown, won with a 7-9 record last season, they must find a way to move the ball.

Arizona could provide the tonic. The Cardinals have allowed 959 yards. But they also have yielded only 43 points, fewest in the division.

Houston (2-0) at New Orleans (1-1)

Two teams that epitomize the NFL's heavy emphasis on offense thus far, with Drew Brees and Matt Schaub tearing up defenses through the air, Ben Tate doing his best Arian Foster imitation on the ground for Houston, and the Saints already having completions to nine receivers. Then again, Houston's Schaub has connected with 10.

The Texans never have started 3-0 and they also haven't made the playoffs in their nine previous seasons. They can be inspired by New Orleans, which has gone from 'Aints to a power since Brees arrived in 2006.

Pittsburgh (1-1) at Indianapolis (0-2)

A few weeks ago, NBC must have been salivating for this matchup. Then the indestructible Peyton Manning underwent a third neck surgery in 19 months. Now, the network must wish flex scheduling could be used in Week 3 so it could bump this one aside.

The Steelers went from abysmal in their opener to their usual stingy selves in shutting out Seattle last week. Pittsburgh's concerns on the offensive line might not come into play here; Indy has only two sacks as its defense spends an inordinate amount of time on the field, something Manning prevented when he was around.

Baltimore (1-1) at St. Louis (0-2)

Banged-up Rams are making too many mistakes, and even in the weak NFC West falling to 0-3 could be too deep a hole. Avoiding it might be insurmountable if Steven Jackson is not recovered from his right leg problems.

The Ravens are angry about their second-week showing at Tennessee after romping past Pittsburgh in their opener.

"That is one thing that I have always liked about our team ? we always bounce back," Ray Lewis said.

New York Jets (2-0) at Oakland (1-1)

Bouncing back will be crucial for the Raiders after their seesaw loss at Buffalo in which they blew a 21-3 lead. Oakland will try to power the ball on the ground, which often plays into the Jets' hands.

Should Jason Campbell be forced to throw often, he'll do it against a defense that had four picks of Luke McCown in a 32-3 romp past Jacksonville. New York's five interceptions lead the league.

Jacksonville (1-1) at Carolina (0-2)

Rookie QBs at the forefront here, with Cam Newton already establishing himself as a playmaker in Carolina. Now, fellow first-rounder Blaine Gabbert takes over for the Jaguars.

If Brady doesn't beat him to it at Buffalo, Newton could become the first passer with more than 400 yards in three consecutive games. An auspicious debut at the least, even if the Panthers haven't won.

Gabbert has Maurice Jones-Drew to carry the running load and a prominent tight end in Marcedes Lewis if he is recovered from a right calf injury. Gabbert also has the ball probably for the remainder of 2011 if he stays healthy.

"We think he has a chance to be a franchise-type quarterback," coach Jack Del Rio said. "He's getting a chance now to be our starting quarterback and become that guy."

San Francisco (1-1) at Cincinnati (1-1)

If you remember when this was a Super Bowl matchup, you're no kid.

Neither the Niners nor the Bengals resembles a Super Bowl team now as each searches for its identity.

New coach Jim Harbaugh was criticized for keeping a 55-yard field goal on the board and not accepting a late-game penalty that would have given San Francisco a first down deep in Dallas territory last week. The Cowboys rallied to win in overtime.

Cincinnati also lost a close one, 24-22 at Denver.

Denver (1-1) at Tennessee (1-1)

Maybe the Titans aren't such a mess after all. Written off as being in rebuilding mold, they handled the strong Ravens well a week ago. If RB Chris Johnson finally is in shape after his preseason holdout, perhaps Tennessee can make some noise in the AFC South.

Much of the noise in Denver has involved whether Kyle Orton should be the quarterback. Hitting the road after a victory should quiet that racket for a while.

Miami (0-2) at Cleveland (1-1)

After two home defeats, there's already chatter that Miami's Tony Sparano will be the first coach fired this season. Maybe folks should wait for some road games considering the Dolphins were 6-2 away from home in 2010. This is their first trip, and they need to shore up the worst defense in the league as Cleveland looks to batter the line with RB Peyton Hillis.

Health and Fitness ? Medical residents end strike ? Health and Fitness

Hospitals and medical students across the province are breathing a collective sigh of relief now that the residents have called off a general, unlimited strike.

Quebec?s 3,000 medical residents were back on the job pronto Saturday afternoon after union leaders got an offer they couldn?t refuse.

That means that full coverage in hospitals resumed immediately for patients and medical students, said Dr. Charles Dussault, president of Fédération des médecins résidents du Québec.

The strike lasted all of four hours ? unleashed after an intense night of negotiations led to a dead end.

But by noon, residents had signed an agreement in principle with Quebec Health Minister Yves Bolduc.

?We got to the point where our members would be satisfied,? Dussault said.

The biggest obstacle was wage parity. Quebec residents earn up to 32 per cent less than their counterparts in other provinces, Dussault said.

The association accepted the government?s monetary offer, which was lower than wage parity, Dussault said.

?We didn?t expect to reach the Canadian average. But at least we?re closer,? Dussault said. ?The agreement is fair to both sides. It respects the government?s capacity to pay.?

Gains include some longterm demands, including 16-hour work shifts instead of 24-hour shifts, recognition of teaching duties, and a sixper-cent increase in salaries over the next five years.

It will take a few months to implement the new work schedules, but Dussault expects that 16-hour shifts will be in place at Quebec hospitals by the next summer.

Hospitals had braced for the strike and ensuing shortage of manpower in patient care by holding emergency meetings last week.

The strike action removed 10 per cent of residents, a total of 300 doctors, from the hospital workforce, in all but essential services areas, including emergency and intensive care units.

Many medical students had expressed concerns that training was suffering because the residents had suspended teaching duties as of July as part of their pressure tactics.

Busy physicians in teaching hospitals, who were already overworked, had to take over teaching responsibilities vacated by residents.

Health officials said they were pleased to have reached an agreement in principle.

It underscores the importance of the residents? role in health care, said Natacha Joncas-Boudreau, an aide to Health Minister Yves Bolduc.

?In the end, it?s the patients who are the winners,? she said.

Surgery chief resident Jonathan Spicer, past president of the McGill Medical Residents Association, said that drawing attention to patient care was the whole point of the strike.

?It?s a stressor for physicians who have to pick up the slack,? said Spicer, whose trauma department was not affected, as it is part of essential services.

Quebec is offering the lowest wages in Canada and that affects recruitment and retention of residents, he noted.

?We have great candidates in Quebec looking to go elsewhere because they are paying 50 per cent more elsewhere,? he said. ?Unless we can be competitive, it?s hard to argue.?

U.N., others to boost military in western Ivory Coast

ABIDJAN (Reuters) - The United Nations and regional governments are deploying additional soldiers to Ivory Coast's border area with Liberia after deadly attacks on villages in the densely forested West African region, a military official said.

Some 23 people were killed in the latest raid by suspected mercenaries from Liberia last week in Ivory Coast's southwest, an area with a history of conflict between indigenous tribes and migrant farmers inflamed by a recent civil war.

"We have sent reinforcements to the area and (the United Nations mission in Ivory Coast) UNOCI has also added patrols to put an end to these attacks," Ivorian army captain Alla Kouakou told Reuters by telephone late on Saturday.

He said the governments of Guinea, Liberia, and Sierra Leone -- members of the so-called Mano River Union which has warned insecurity on the border represented a threat for the entire West African region -- would also add forces.

He did not give details.

Ivory Coast's southwest has been fraught with ethnic strife for decades, largely centered around land rights between indigenous tribes and the migrants who now make up the backbone of Ivory Coast's cocoa industry.

Tensions between the two groups have reignited since last year's disputed election sparked a civil war that toppled incumbent leader Laurent Gbagbo, paving the way for election winner Alassane Ouattara to take power.

The indigenous tribes in southwestern Ivory Coast and in nearby Liberia are believed to have supported Gbagbo, who was arrested in mid-April after fierce fighting.

Since Gbagbo's arrest, violence has simmered on.

In the most recent attack overnight on Thursday in the Tai region, officials and residents said the gunmen were likely former Gbagbo supporters from indigenous tribes, including the Guere, who had fled to Liberia during the war.

Some 19 migrant farmers from Niger and Burkina Faso and two government soldiers were among the 23 dead, Kouakou said.

"These were the youths from the villages that left for Liberia during the war and are starting to come back. They did this," said Issiaka Yameogo, a cocoa farmer in Zriglo, one of the villages attacked.

"We are afraid because Liberia is not far and they can come back again. But we are also worried because we can't easily return to the bush to harvest the cocoa, and it is the start of the new season and we must harvest."

Ivory Coast is the world's largest cocoa grower. The southwest accounts for some 90,000-120,000 tonnes of the annual crop, which this year is expected to top 1.4 million.

Father Laurentin Guei, from the Catholic mission in Tai, said the attack was the second in a month.
