As TU prepares to make its eighth bowl appearance in 10 seasons, each additional staff member also is expected to receive a raise.
"My understanding is that (staff salary adjustments) have been approved and we're waiting for the paperwork to come back," Blankenship said. "It's all been agreed to in principle. It could all be final this week. It all takes effect on Jan. 1.
"I'm not naïve. I know I've got some really good coaches right now, and I know that other people see that we've got some really good coaches. I'm trying to be preemptive. The important thing for me is that we make the effort to keep our guys. I want our guys to know they are appreciated."
At TU, multiyear contracts typically are given only to the head coach, offensive coordinator and defensive coordinator, but a source indicated that Johnson also may get a multiyear deal.
Through two seasons as the Golden Hurricane coach, Blankenship's record is 18-8. This season, the 10-3 Hurricane captured its first Conference USA championship since 2005. On Dec. 31, TU faces Iowa State in the AutoZone Liberty Bowl at Memphis, Tenn.
Of the 120 schools competing at the Football Bowl Subdivision level, 26 have had coaching changes this year. Blankenship, who does not have an agent and says he has not been contacted in regard to jobs at other universities, has three seasons remaining on his original five-year contract.
As a private school, TU is not obligated to release compensation figures. While Blankenship's exact compensation is not known, it is believed that his pay level is substantially below that of his predecessor, Todd Graham.
In 2010, according to figures submitted by TU to the Internal Revenue Service, Graham was paid $1.08 million and collected $36,684 in additional income.
Until TU hires an athletic director to succeed the recently dismissed Ross Parmley, university Vice President Kevan Buck is the interim athletic director. It is believed that TU President Steadman Upham has authorized Buck to negotiate with the 56-year-old Blankenship on what is expected to be a new contract for the head coach.
Guy, 52, played linebacker at Oklahoma State and was Utah State's head coach in 2005-08. Seven days after Blankenship became Tulsa's head coach in January 2011, Guy was hired to coordinate the defense.
This season, the Hurricane has a school record 48 sacks while leading Conference USA in total defense and rushing defense. Nationally, TU is 26th in total defense and 17th against the run.
Before joining Blankenship's staff last season, the 54-year-old Johnson was the head coach at Illinois State (2000-08) and Murray State (1997-99). The 2012 Tulsa offensive line allowed only nine sacks in 13 games, while opening holes for a 3,123-yard, 37-touchdown ground game.
During the 1970s, Johnson and Blankenship were Hurricane teammates - Johnson as an offensive lineman and Blankenship as a quarterback.
