LED headlights are so 2010; laser will illuminate the road of the future
We've seen some interesting ideas for improving?automotive safety, such as?Ford's talking cars and?touchscreen steering wheels. Most of that improvement has been focused on increasing driver reflexes and attention spans. BMW is taking a different approach, however, by stepping up the technology of headlights. After all, if you can't see the road ahead of you then you can't drive safely.
LED headlights have been the top of the line headlights for a little while but BMW doesn't think those are powerful enough. Engineers are experimenting?with laser headlights. These laser lights won't help you survive a?zombie apocalypse, but they will let you get a clearer view of the road ahead. Even more than just improving safety, though, the new laser lights will present a 70% more efficient lumens-from-watt conversion.
BMW plans to mitigate the dangers from?beaming lasers into the eyes of oncoming traffic by converting the light inside the headlight housing. The raw laser light will filter through a fluorescent phosphor material; this process takes the blue laser and changes it into a much more pleasant, and safer, white light. Laser lights won't see production for a few more years, and that's assuming that no other, more effective technology hits the streets in the mean time. BMW expects its laser light innovations to pave the way to other automotive safety improvements, especially since the laser light is so much more efficient than LED technology.
