Top 5 Reasons Why I Chose Georgia College

As parents and students are often made aware, choosing the right college can be a daunting task because of the amount of thought and dedication that must be given to the decision. ?For me as a student with a disability, choosing Georgia College was nearly a no-brainer. And here's why:

The people, in the Georgia College and Milledgeville communities, are fantastic. Coming from a relatively small suburb of Atlanta and growing up in what most would call a "bubble," I am quite accustomed to knowing everything about everyone with whom I associated. When I came to Milledgeville for the first time as a high school junior, I immediately understood that Milledgeville wasn't just Georgia's antebellum capitol, but it was also a community, a home, and a resting place.?

Georgia College cares. Unlike most universities, Georgia College knows their students by name. Yes, I have a student identification number, but the only way it is used is administratively. ?I've never actually seen my number instead of my name used on a class roster, and I've never had to recite it aloud to a university official. I'm not a number. I'm Erin.

The history behind the college and the community is astounding. As a child, I always dreamed of living in a place where I could tell people who did what and where at some point in history. ?Understanding the rich history behind the community has allowed me the opportunity to appreciate history and to appreciate the legacies of those that have come before me and those who will come after me. After all, how many college students can say that they have seen the original governor's mansion in their state because it's housed on their campus! I can.

It feels like home. Since starting college, as I'm positive that most students do, I've "accidentally" begun referring to Milledgeville as "home" rather than the town in which my parents live. My friends, my professors, and fellow community members have been like a family, and thus, Milledgeville is home.

The disability community is very prevalent in Milledgeville. Though this isn't something I noticed outright, in the nearly three years that I've lived in Milledgeville, I've come to understand that people with disabilities seem to be a bit more prevalent here, or at least the community seems to be more aware, than in metro Atlanta. ?Though I'm not involved with the community centers as a consumer, volunteering my time to brighten the day of one of my fellow community members is all worth it. ?The added comfort that these folks are included in the everyday functionality of the community is oddly refreshing.

Though there are numerous reasons for choosing Georgia's Public Liberal Arts University and the city of Milledgeville, the top five make my heart smile.

What are your favorite things about Milledgeville and the Georgia College community? How can we show others that we're proud?
