Sara Douglass / The Devil?s Diadem (Published:? Harper Voyager 2011)

Sara Douglas has a Phd in early Modern English history and this background shows clearly in her latest work.? It is mid-twelfth century Europe and Maeb Langtofte joins an aristocratic household to attend Adelie, the wife of the Earl of Pengraic. The earl is a powerful Lord of the Marches, the dark Welsh borderlands.? Then a plague that has swept Europe overtakes England and as life descends into chaos and civil disorder, Maeb is about to discover that the horrors she survived at Pengraic Castle were but a prelude to the terrifying maelstrom which now envelops her and all of her country-folk. Hell has come to desecrate England, and the only thing that can possibly foil its plans are the wits of one lonely, isolated and terrified woman.? Douglass has combined a strong historical atmosphere with fantasy and mythological elements to create an intriguing story.

Daniel Abraham / The Dragon?s path (Published: Orbit ? 2011)

In a medieval world comprised of many competing kingdoms and numerous different races, the lords and princes battles each other to gain power and prestige ? the city of Vanai the focus of the latest conquest.? Abraham presents his story through the eyes of four different people ? Marcus the caravan guard, whose men have been impressed into the city army; Cithrin, ward of the local bank, who has to smuggle the banks riches out of the city and across the countryside.? Geder, reluctant solider and a pawn for others more powerful.? All these people combine to create a rich tale of swords and sorcery.

Trudi Canavan / The rogue? (Published: Orbit ? 2011)

This is next installment in Trudi Canavan's latest series, the Traitor Spy trilogy, which is set some years after her Black Magician books.? A direct follow on from the first book in the series ( The Ambassador?s Mission) we know find Lorkin living among the Sachakan rebels, and trying to learn about them and their unique magic.? Sonea searches for the rogue magician, knowing that Cery cannot avoid assassination forever, but the rogue's influence over the city's underworld is far greater than she feared. His only weakness is the loss of his mother, now locked away in the Lookout. In Sachaka, Dannyl has lost the respect of the Sachakan elite for letting Lorkin join the Traitors. The Ashaki's attention has shifted, instead, to the new Elyne Ambassador, a man Dannyl knows all too well. And in the University, two female novices are about to remind the Guild that sometimes their greatest enemy is found within.
