Belly dancing is still much misunderstood in the Western World today. I invite you to attend a belly dance class and see how it empowers women. Women who belly dance report increased self-esteem, better body image and greater confidence. But let?s keep the art of bellydance in perspective ? I feel some belly dance teachers go too far.
Talk to many belly dancers today and they?ll tell you belly dancing is NOT about sex.. What rubbish!
How can you look at a belly dancer in action and deny that she?s wonderfully sexy. Womanly, in a slinky costume that shows off her curves to best advantage ? what man wouldn?t be spellbound? And why shouldn?t a woman be proud of her ability to captivate every man in the room?
Sadly, in the lands of its origin, the ?myth? of bellydance as women of easy virtue is no misconception. In Turkey, there are clubs where patrons can ?visit? the dancers at the end of the evening. In Egypt, there are belly dancers who are very wealthy in their old age, thanks to generous sugar daddies in their heyday. These days, Egyptian belly dance has such a bad reputation that it?s rare to find an Egyptian-born professional dancer. Foreign dancers who come to Egypt in search of ?authenticity?, can get a nasty shock when men proposition them after the show.
It?s no surprise, then, that Western belly dancers try to distance themselves from the realities of a Middle Eastern bar, by trying to elevate the Danse Orientale to a higher plane and why not?
Let?s face it, belly dancers wear more than you?d wear sunbathing.Bellydancing is simply not risque enough to satisfy the sleazy end of the market in today?s society. While some tribal fusion belly dancerscombine belly dancing and burlesque, by far the majority of belly dancers outside the Middle East are respectable cabaret performers or teachers.
