Menorca Holidays and the Island Games

Menorca holidays are well known for the calm, relaxing atmosphere of the island, the tranquility of the Mediterranean and delicious food, but there is a lot more going on behind the scenes. Although not particularly seen as a place for sport, Menorca has recently become involved in international sport following its acceptance into the Island Games Association in 2005.

The Island Games Association was established in 1985 on the Isle of Man, as part of the Isle of Man International Year of Sport. Designed to be a one-off event, the 1985 games were so successful that the stage was set for many more.

Rhodes 2007

While sport might not be the first thing you think of on Menorca holidays, the island's acceptance into the aforementioned association has paved the way for improving relationships with other smaller islands in a similar position. The games are held every two years, and despite only participating in two editions so far, Menorca has already made its way up the medal table to 15th out of 27 competitors. At the first attempt, Menorca managed to come 7th in the 2007 games, hosted by Rhodes. They managed to pick up 11 gold medals, out of a total haul of 30 medals. Perhaps the highlight of this performance was the island's storming to victory in the men's basketball competition.

Aland 2009

For those on Menorca holidays in early 2009, there may have been a noticeable increase in the number of people running, swimming, shooting and jumping in recreation areas and sports areas as the island geared up for its second appearance at the 2009 Games.

At the 2009 edition, Menorca didn't quite match its debut success, finishing one place lower in the medal table in 8th position. Missing out on the men's basketball, having to settle for silver, the island did achieve golden success in the women's basketball, sailboarding, archery, shooting and tennis, managing a still impressive 9 golds amongst a total of 27 medals. In the end the 2009 campaign was only slightly less successful than 2007.

The 2011 Games

If, following your Menorca holidays you develop a soft spot for the island, then you will be able to cheer them on in this year's edition of the Island Games, which will be hosted by the Isle of Wight, just off the South Coast of Great Britain. The 14th edition of the games, the competition is scheduled to take place between 25th June and 1st July 2011.
