Matters Dunaway ? Level 3 wins CDN deal with online gaming firm ...

Level 3 on Monday reminded the industry that content delivery networks are not solely for video after it was selected by online games publisher Frogster to support its range of massively multiplayer online (MMO) titles.

Perhaps more than in any other area of the entertainment industry, user experience is critical to the success and ultimately the bottom line of an online game, said Seth Iorio, COO of Frogster, in a statement. In order to facilitate a great user experience, we were looking for a CDN provider that understood the demanding nature of our customers, who want the newest content on a massive scale as soon as its available.

The deal will see Level 3 provide caching and delivery services for high-speed downloads and updates from the German games publishers portfolio, which boasts 6 million users across Europe, America and Oceania.

As the online games industry has grown and demand for game content across devices has exploded, it has become increasingly important to have a CDN with the underlying network infrastructure in place to easily scale to support a quality experience, noted Level 3s president of European markets James Heard.

He insisted that Level 3 has the expertise necessary to ensure that Frogster is able to support the growth of its global user base and establish business models that can make free-to-play games profitable.

We work with them to address those challenges with the right combination of solutions, he said.

Despite the increasing demands of online games companies, video is generally seen as the biggest driver of online traffic growth going forward both on fixed and mobile networks.

Consulting firm IDATE claimed earlier in May that mobile data traffic will grow to 33 times the current level by 2020, with around half the growth coming from video.

Meanwhile Level 3s director of product management in Europe predicted during last weeks Breakfast with Total Telecom that video will drive a six-fold increase in total Internet traffic by 2012.
